Best Hainam Kopitiam in KL

1. Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam, Kuala Lumpur

A decades old traditional Hainanese coffee shop that has gained so much hype among the foodies recently. Founded from a humble stall along Lorong Panggung, Ho Kow Kopitiam counts itself as one of the old names in the business in KL, with over 6 decades of history. 

While no longer run from its original stall, Ho Kow Kopitiam is presently located along Jalan Balai Polis, a stone-throw's distance from Petaling Street. Its current location offers modern comforts but without losing out on any of that vintage, old-school flair. 

It's most popular for the kopitiam staple of crisp, airy toasted bread slices lathered in a deliciously rich, decadent crunchy peanut butter and smooth kaya, as well as an aromatic nasi lemak tailored for Chinese tastebuds, where the sambal is equal parts mildly sweet and spicy, served with a ridiculously large fried chicken thigh. 

Then of course, there's the coffee: fragnant, gao (rich), and served either piping hot in an old ceramic cup like how the Uncle or Auntie would prefer it, or chilled on ice. Either way, you won't go wrong!

2. Yut Kee Restaurant, Jalan Kamunting

Yut Kee Restaurant had been nearly all locals favourite for a Hainanese breakfast especially with their toast and chicken chop. It is a very old classic Hainanese Kopitiam joint that served Hainanese Malaysian style Western Food that operate in the modern town area for very long time since 1928. 

You will have to expect a queue to get a table when you go during peak hours and no worries, they have a nice waiting compound for customers to sit and wait until Aunty Margaret hollers your name. Table sharing is still a common practice in Yut Kee and one that adds to the old school charm. 

One of their special item is Roast Pork Special that only available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It was a real delight to see the freshly roasted rolls of pork coming out from the kitchen and the carving was done near where the counter was.

3. Thong Kee Hainan Coffee Shop

Thong Kee Coffee Shop has plenty to offer in terms of variety - this kopitiam that originated from Bentong serves good toasts, soft boiled eggs and coffee/tea, which complements the other offerings from the stalls available including curry mee, chee cheong fun, Sarawak noodles, roasted chicken rice and so forth. They are quite busy in the morning so it's best to get there before 9am because customers were seen waiting behind almost every occupied table, queue continued at the outside. 

While many of them tucked into toasted Hainanese bread with kaya butter, or dipped with half boiled eggs, there's something different spotted in this kopitiam - sandwich croissant. A very crunchy outer layer and chewy soft inside but be ready for the oiliness when cold butter melted into the bread. It would be perfect to match with the signature beverage 1+1, it said to be the best in town. It is actually cham, a mix of tea and kopi. 

Sarawak Mee

The wantan noodles stall dishes out pretty good Sarawak handmade noodles lightly tossed in sauce, topped with minced meat and roasted pork slices.

4. Nam Heong Restaurant 

Backed by 60 years of rich history, Nam Heong stands renowned for preserving the timeless flavours of Ipoh's culinary heritage while delivering impeccable service. Through the years, Nam Heong has witnessed tremendous growth with numerous outlets across West Malaysia - including Pavilion Elite, Starling Mall, Da Men Mall, One Utama and more. Each location is strategically sited within city centres and easily accessible like shopping mall. 

The red and white mechanical humanoids were added to help improve the quality of service at the outlets. Running on rechargeable batteries, these artificially intelligent robots were programmed to speak in English and Cantonese and they can say "Welcome", "Your food is served, please enjoy", "Im in operation, please give orders" and "Excuse me". 

There is always a long wait for the freshly baked egg tarts. As you can see Nam Heong's egg tart crust is layered which contributes to that crispy and satisfying bite. It's better to enjoy the tart as soon as possible while they still warm.
